As a mom of a child who needs an IEP (individualized education plan) I am shocked, furious, and disheartened by the training of educational professionals and facilitators monitoring the work.

I have spent years begging school systems to address the needs of my child in the school setting. In a review of their IEP today I keep hearing that my child eligibility is up to the team. WRONG! Her eligibility is up to re-evaluation by a doctor. Educators must pay attention to the laws. I understand that your classroom is your kingdom, I’m not mad at that, and you must pay attention to the rules that you have to follow for kids with an IEP.
My child has had major mental health diagnoses and my child has significant behaviors that are not alright. AND she needs every adults help. I am a divorced mom who is now remarried. Her other parent sees nothing wrong and behaviors are popping up left and right in the school setting.
In the IEP the staff have consistently been condescending, rude, and avoidant. Admittedly, I have a role as a parent and so does her other parent who does;’t seem to take anything seriously.
My rant here today comes with an actionable request, if you have any interaction with the educational system:
Please, please, please read you states rule and attend to federal guidelines for special education. There are rules and regulations that must be attended to for a child’s 504 plan or their IEP. There are academic responsibilities that apply to mental health not just a disability related to physical health or intellectual disability. There must be parity here as well as in other health systems.
Hugs in frustration,
Tiffany
